DKN AM-3 Exercise Bike Review

DKN AM-3 Exercise Bike DKN AM-3 Exercise Bike

Our score -

The first thing that you notice with the DKN AM3 exercise bike is the stylish looks. It certainly wouldn't look out of place in even the most modernly designed living rooms.

Starting with the basics: We can confrim that the seat is comfortable and can be adjusted for both height and lateral position, ensuring that a suitable riding position can be found regardless of your height. The self-levelling pedals are a decent size and have the customary straps.

Unusually for an exercise bike in this price bracket, the AM-3 comes with an 11 KG flywheel, which along with its other heavy duty drive components results in a very smooth pedalling experience. Clearly, the smoothness of the pedalling action is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing an exercise bike.

The console on the AM-3 has a clear, back-lit 2 colour LCD providing all the essential workout feedback. We found the display very easy to read and the user interface of the console quite intuitive.

The DKN AM-3 has a comprehensive range of programmes, consisting of manual, 12 pre-set, custom user programmes, heart rate control and constant Watt programmes. As the name implies, with the manual programme, you control the resistance, but are able to set target time, distance or calories. Once a target has been set and the programme started, the attribute targetted will count down until it reaches zero. This is absolutely perfect for quick exercise sessions with simple goals such as burning 50 calories or cycling for a couple of kilometers. The profiles of the pre-set programmes are printed right on the console, which makes choosing programmes easy and each of these pre-set programmes can be used for a user defined lefined duration.

You can measure your pulse rate using the hand grip sensors on the handle bars, but for accurate and continuous measurement, the console has a built-in wireless receiver which is compatible with Polar (or any other uncoded 5 khz) chest belts. This method of heart rate measurement is ECG accurate and the use of an (optional) chest belt is essential to use the heart rate controlled programmes on the AM-3. In heart rate control mode, you simply select whether you wish to exercise at 55%, 75% or 90% or your maximum heart rate and the bike adjusts the resistance levels automatically to try to keep you within this zone. The maximum heart rate level is something that the console works out automatically based on the user profile information entered. Alternatively, you may specify a target heart rate level in beats per minute.

The maximum user weight is a hefty 150 kgs (over 23.5 stones) and there is a full 2 years parts and labour warranty in the unlikely event of a problem. Finally, it's worth mentioning that there are transport wheels on the front of the machine, making it relatively easy to move it around once assembled and there are independent leg levellers to ensure that the bike will be stable on uneven floors.

In summary, the DKN AM-3 is a truely exceptional exercise bike for the price point and is easy to recommend.
