NordicTrack Commercial S15i Studio Indoor Cycle Review

The NordicTrack Commercial S15 Studio indoor cycle is a bike we’ve been wanting to test out for a while. Part of the existing range of NordicTrack bikes, this connected indoor cycle looks pretty impressive on paper so we got one in to take a closer look. Here’s what we found……

First, as always there’s the small matter of building the bike and we’re happy to report that there’s nothing to see here. The whole assembly process (once the bike was out of the box which is a small job in itself) took comfortably less than an hour and in about 40 minutes our test unit was ready to be put through its paces. Assembly of this particular bike is as easy as one could hope with clear diagrams and well-written instructions. Thank you, NordicTrack!

Once built the S15 looks uncomplicated in every way apart from the console, which when turned off looks a sleek black, but when on is similar in many ways to a tablet. This bike has an air of simplicity about it that few other technically advanced models manage to achieve. With thick-gauge steel components, it also manages to combine that simplicity with rock-solid construction. Shake this bike and it doesn’t want to budge an inch, leaving no doubt that this is a very well constructed bike.

The console that also looks simple when switched off, looks a different prospect altogether when switched on. With a 14″ display all the information displayed features large, easy-to-read characters and the navigation is intuitive enough to mean that most people will be able to find their way through to the section where they want to be or can explore all the menus, sub-menus, and different training options without getting lost or confused. There’s a selection of videos that are free but the whole focus of this bike is iFit and the interactive training it delivers. As an iFit subscriber (30 days included free when you purchase the bike), you get the ability to map out your own custom running routes on Google Maps, access to a huge library of a frankly silly amount of high-definition workout videos led by professional personal trainers, the chance to participate in online races against other iFit members and personalised advice for nutrition, exercise routines and sleep schedules.  There’s also a daily updated map based workout that takes you on a different run each day just to keep things interesting. The huge, clear, touchscreen display is responsive and intuitive to use and navigating around, for the most part, can be done without referring to the user manual. The only thing to bear in mind is that all accessible programmes on the S15 and iFit®, with the exception of the manually controlled workout, require a Wi-Fi-based internet connection to work.

Ergonomically the S15 is excellent. With a few adjustments, it’s easy to find a comfortable riding position which is just about the most important thing on any exercise bike. Adjustments to the saddle can be made horizontally and vertically and the handlebars also adjust vertically making it hassle-free to get into a good riding position. Most riders will quickly be able to get comfortable here, and even if you’re especially tall, there’s lots of height adjustment available. The saddle itself is a racing-style seat which, if you’re already accustomed to this type of saddle is actually very comfortable, though as always if you’re returning to cycling after a long break or are new to cycling, it may take a week or so to get used to.

There’s also a motorised -10% to +20% incline/decline system on the S15 that syncs with and is controlled by the video-based workouts. Ride up a hill on screen and you’ll find the bike inclining at the front and the resistance increases at the same time. The same thing happens the other way around too. The difference between this way of delivering a workout and the traditional old-style way is hard to overstate. This is decidedly 21st-century technology, it works and it feels great making the whole experience immersive in a way that many other models cannot match.

Other features of the S15 include a wireless heart rate receiver (belt optional), dual water bottle holders, cooling workout fan, and two 1.4kg (3lbs) dumbbells. It’s also covered by NordicTrack’s 5-year frame, 2-year onsite parts and labour warranty.

Review Summary - In Brief

We think the NordicTrack S15 is a great bike. The quality of the training videos is second to none with obviously high production values being applied to all of them. If you're looking for an indoor cycle that's going to keep you engaged, help you train regularly, race against friends and other riders, then this is a superb choice. And at the current offer price  (which we're reliably informed won't last long) that equates to roughly a 50% discount off the normal price, this easily makes our bike of the month.
